Neue Grafik _ New Graphic

Posted on 11:39 by cena

-

Neue Grafik is seen to be a catalyst in the Swiss design going from an isolated movement no one really outside of Europe knew about, to a design which influenced the world. None more so than America and it's product-driven modernist design revolution.

I feel visually Neue Grafik is really interesting and something I could definitely reference - very hard to get your hands on a copy but I'm going to try my best. Personally, it looks beautiful to me. You can begin to understand when designers like Müller-Brockmann talk about visual harmony and the importance of a grid with no decoration - the beauty is in the objectivity and simplicity.

I feel more so than ever in todays cluttered and technological world, I feel a lot more people, me especially are more drawn to considered and uncluttered design which doesn't almost overpower and stress you out more. - More of this will be covered when I look into todays global culture and design inspiration.

Published quarterly in Zurich from '58 to '65.

Often just 2 pt sizes used. One for copy and one for headings, areas of pronunciation or key information. I think this works really well, small copy inviting you to look closer and read and almost becoming a sort of blur from far away- allowing the focus to be on the key information which needs to work from far.

58 _ 65
"Neue Grafik was the single most important factor in establishing the international influence of Swiss graphic design.... Neue Grafik was a shiny, white-covered, near-square-format quarterly. It first appeared in Autumn 1958 and closed, after eighteen issues. in 1965

"Neue Grafik was arguably the most important journal responsible for disseminating contemporary and historical Swiss functional design ideas and philosophies referred to as the “International Typographic Style”, “Swiss New Typography” or “Objective-Functional Typography”." - Magazine Archive, 2011.
